Google's AI Overviews have been criticized for providing dumb answers, such as suggesting cheese can slide off pizza without warning. The AI's recommendation was based on a Reddit comment from 11 years ago, which was likely meant as a joke. 

This highlights a flaw in the training of generative AI models, which feeds them as much information as possible, leading to garbage being ingested and regurgitated. Google has since apologized for the issue and is taking swift action to improve its AI models.

2. TikTok just announced a bunch of new AI tools for advertising

TikTok has introduced TikTok Symphony, an AI creative suite designed to help brands create AI-generated ads. The tool, which includes an AI video-generator, aims to make the ad-creating process simple and efficient. Other updates include an AI-assistant for advertisers, a centralized marketing hub called TikTok One, and predictive AI performance solutions.

These tools were introduced at TikTok's fourth annual TikTok World product summit. TikTok revealed that 61% of users have made a purchase on the app directly or after seeing an ad. The company is also fighting a legal battle against the U.S. government and planning global layoffs in operations and marketing.

3. AI headphones let wearer listen to a single person in a crowd, by looking at them just once

A University of Washington team has developed an artificial intelligence system called "Target Speech Hearing" that allows users to enroll a person speaking for three to five seconds. The system cancels all other sounds in the environment and plays only the enrolled speaker's voice in real time even as the listener moves around in noisy places. The team presented their findings at the ACM CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems and the code for the proof-of-concept device is available for others to build on.

The team tested the system on 21 subjects, who rated the clarity of the enrolled speaker's voice nearly twice as high as the unfiltered audio on average. The TSH system can enroll only one speaker at a time and is working to expand to earbuds and hearing aids in the future.

4. OpenAI’s News Corp deal licenses content from WSJ, New York Post, and more

OpenAI has signed a multi-year deal with News Corp, the owner of The Wall Street Journal, the New York Post, and The Daily Telegraph. The deal could be worth over $250 million in cash and credits for OpenAI technology use.
