1. Rabbit R1 turns out to just be an Android app with extra steps

Secretive wearables startup Humane's AI Pin and competitor Rabbit's R1 have both been criticized for their high-priced AI devices. The Rabbit R1 is a cheaper, AI chatbot-powered device that promises to answer any question. However, it has been found that the entire operating system is a simple Android smartphone app and can be run on a different device.

The Verge's Allison Johnson argued that the AI gadget could have been an app after all. Rabbit has defended its proprietary software, stating that the device runs "on the cloud" with bespoke Android open source software and lower level firmware modifications. The Verge points out that even Humane's AI Pin is a glorified open-source Android project but still costs an eye-watering $700.

2. Anthropic now has a Claude chatbot app for iOS

Anthropic

Anthropic has released a free iOS app for its Claude chatbot, allowing users to access the chatbot and upload files and images. The app syncs conversations across devices, allowing users to switch between devices without losing their chat history.

Anthropic has also launched a new paid tier, the Team plan, which offers greater usage and access to the Claude 3 model family, including Opus, Sonnet, and Haiku. The plan costs $30 per user per month, with a minimum head count of five users per team. Anthropic claims that its Claude 3 language model outperforms ChatGPT and Google's Gemini in key industry benchmarks.

3. AI that determines risk of death helps save lives in hospital trial

An AI system trained on the heart's electrical activity has proven to save lives by alerting physicians about patients at high risk of dying. In a clinical trial with almost 16,000 patients at two hospitals, the AI reduced overall deaths among high-risk patients by 31%. The system was trained on over 450,000 ECG tests, which measure the heart's electrical activity and survival data.

The AI learned to produce a percentile score representing each patient's risk of death, with those in at least the 95th percentile considered high risk. The AI alert system was tested with 39 physicians at two different hospitals, reducing high-risk patients' deaths from heart issues by more than 90%. The AI alert system is already being used across 14 military hospitals in Taiwan.

4. AI security bill aims to prevent safety breaches of AI models

The Secure Artificial Intelligence Act, introduced by Senators Mark Warner and Thom Tillis, aims to prevent safety breaches of AI models by creating a database tracking AI security breaches. The bill would establish an Artificial Intelligence Security Center at the National Security Agency, leading research into "counter-AI" techniques and developing guidance for preventing such measures.

It also requires the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency to create a database of AI breaches, including "near-misses." The bill classifies AI security techniques as data poisoning, evasion attacks, privacy-based attacks, and abuse attacks. The bill will need to go through a committee before being taken up by the larger Senate.
