OpenAI has released the first of a series of AI models, called OpenAI o1, which can reason through complex tasks and solve harder problems in science, coding, and math.

The models are trained to spend more time thinking before responding, learning to refine their thinking process and recognize their mistakes. The models perform similarly to PhD students on challenging benchmark tasks in physics, chemistry, and biology.

2. Salesforce’s AgentForce: The AI assistants that want to run your entire business

Salesforce has launched Agentforce, a suite of AI-powered autonomous agents designed to augment human workers across various business functions. The company positions this as the "third wave" of AI, moving beyond predictive models and generative AI to "agentic systems."

Agentforce builds on Salesforce's existing platform, leveraging customer data and its recently developed Data Cloud. Early adopters report significant productivity gains, with Wiley experiencing a 40% autonomous resolution rate for customer inquiries and Kaiser Permanente handling patient inquiries with over 90% resolution rates.

3. Why aren’t businesses making effective use of AI?

Despite concerns from some workers that AI will take their jobs, most businesses are not using AI technology in any meaningful way, and few have plans to replace people with AI. This is according to a new study from freelancer management platform TalentDesk, that asked businesses on their current use of AI in practice, and their intentions to use AI to replace staff.

Most however, doubt that AIs can replace higher-end creative work and human-based professional services - such as people management and finance - any time soon.

4. YouTube Music’s AI radio is officially called ‘Ask Music’

YouTube Music's AI prompt-based conversational radio, "Ask Music," is expanding internationally, including in Canada and Australia.

The feature, which appears as a purple card in the Home feed, allows users to turn any idea into a custom radio. It offers a fullscreen chat UI with accepted prompts, a playlist card, and auto-playing tracks. Currently, only available on Android, the feature is expected to be extended beyond the US.

5. Amazon to expand U.K. operations with £8 billion investment in new AWS data centers over five years

AWS plans to invest £8 billion over the next five years (2024-2028) in building, operating, and maintaining data centres in the UK. This investment is part of AWS's long-term commitment to supporting growth and productivity across the country.

It is estimated to contribute £14 billion to the UK's total GDP through to 2028 and support an average of more than 14,000 full-time equivalent jobs annually at local businesses. AWS has invested over £3 billion in the UK since 2020-2023, supporting an average of over 6,000 FTE jobs at local businesses.
