1. Midjourney releases new unified AI image editor on the web

Midjourney, a leading AI image generator, has unveiled a new editor interface that unifies features such as inpainting and outpainting/canvas extension into a single view. The new web editor is now available to all users who have created at least 10 images on the platform.

Midjourney CEO David Holz aims to make editing AI generations easier and more seamless. The new editor and message mirroring feature also improve communication between the web and Discord communities. Midjourney faces a class-action lawsuit from artists accusing the startup of copyright violations.

2. Tesla is hiring people to do the robot

Tesla is hiring people to train its humanoid Optimus robot using motion capture suits and mimicking actions. The position, advertised as a "Data Collection Operator," pays up to $48 per hour and requires walking for over seven hours a day, carrying up to 30 pounds, and wearing a VR headset.

The position has been filled by over 50 workers over the past year. Animesh Garg, a senior researcher at Nvidia Research, warns that Optimus may require millions of hours of data before it's fully ready for work in Tesla's factories.

3. OpenAI announces content deal with Condé Nast, including content from Wired, The New Yorker and Vogue

OpenAI has announced a partnership with Condé Nast, allowing its products, such as ChatGPT and SearchGPT, to display content from various publications. The partnership is part of a trend of media outlets partnering with AI startups to enter into content deals. OpenAI has previously partnered with Time magazine, News Corp., and Reddit, allowing the company to access current and archived articles from various publications.

The Center for Investigative Reporting sued OpenAI and Microsoft for alleged copyright infringement, while The New York Times filed a suit against Microsoft and OpenAI in December, alleging intellectual property violations related to its journalistic content appearing in ChatGPT training data. OpenAI disagreed with the Times' characterization of events.

4. ElevenLabs’ text-to-speech app Reader is now available globally

ElevenLabs has made its Reader app available globally with support for 32 languages. The app allows users to upload text content and listen to it in different languages and voices.

The app, first released in the U.S., the U.K., and Canada, now supports languages including Portuguese, Spanish, French, Hindi, German, Japanese, Arabic, Korean, Italian, Tamil, and Swedish. ElevenLabs has added hundreds of new voices from its library and licensed the voices of actors such as Judy Garland, James Dean, Burt Reynolds, and Sir Laurence Olivier.

5. Goodfire raises $7M to break open the black box of generative AI models

Goodfire has raised $7M in a seed round led by Lightspeed Venture Partners, with participation from Menlo Ventures, South Park Commons, Work-Bench, Juniper Ventures, Mythos Ventures, Bluebirds Capital, and several angels. The funding will be used to scale up the engineering and research team and enhance Goodfire's core technology.

The company aims to demystify generative AI models by providing developers with deep insights into their internal workings. Goodfire's products will help bridge the gap between research and practical usage of interpretability methods.
