1. Microsoft announces Copilot Plus PCs with built-in AI hardware

Microsoft has introduced the "Copilot Plus PCs" branding, highlighting the inclusion of AI hardware in Windows laptops. The first Copilot Plus PCs will be powered by Qualcomm, not Intel, and will be available from all major laptop partners, including Dell, Lenovo, Samsung, HP, Acer, and Asus.

The laptops will run over 40 AI models as part of Windows 11 and support OpenAI's GPT-4o model. Microsoft expects 50 million laptops to be sold under the Copilot Plus PC branding over the next year.

2. Reddit soars after announcing OpenAI deal that allows use of its data for training AI models

Reddit shares surged 11% in extended trading after the social media platform announced a partnership with OpenAI, allowing ChatGPT maker to train its artificial intelligence models on Reddit content.

OpenAI will gain access to Reddit's API, which provides real-time, structured, and unique content from Reddit. In exchange, Reddit will begin offering certain AI features to users and moderators, powered by OpenAI, which will also become a Reddit advertising partner. The deal provides another spark following a rally in meme stocks such as GameStop.

3. Sony Music Group warns more than 700 companies against using its content to train AI

Sony Music Group has sent formal letters to over 700 AI companies and streaming platforms, urging them not to use its content for AI training without explicit licensing agreements. The company recognizes the potential of AI but warns that unauthorized use of SMG content in AI systems deprives SMG Companies and SMG Talent of control over and appropriate compensation.

The letter asks companies to confirm not using SMG content without permission or provide details about how the content was used in AI training. The European Union's Artificial Intelligence Act requires providers of general-purpose AI models to make public a detailed summary of the content used.

4. Electricity grids creak as AI demands soar

Data centre electricity needs are forecast to double between 2022 and 2026 due to the increasing demand for AI. Generative AI systems, which use large language models to generate content, are inefficient from a computational perspective, using around 33 times more energy than task-specific software.

The International Energy Agency expects this demand to double in just four years. Data centres store vast volumes of information, power AI and cryptocurrency, and underpin life as we know it. Utility firms in the US are feeling the pressure, with lawmakers rethinking tax breaks for data centre developers.

5. Scarlett Johansson says OpenAI used her likeness without permission for its 'Sky' voice assistant

Actress Scarlett Johansson has accused OpenAI of copying her voice for its 'Sky' voice assistant, despite denying permission. Johansson declined an offer from Sam Altman to voice the ChatGPT 4.0 system, but when OpenAI demoed GPT-4o, she was shocked and angry that the voice sounded so similar to her.

OpenAI apologised for the mistake and stated that the voice of Sky is not hers and was never intended to resemble her. The company has since paused using the voice in its products.
