2. Chinese team creates world’s first AI training system that runs entirely on light

A Beijing team of scientists has developed the world's first fully optical artificial intelligence chip, Taichi-II. The chip significantly boosts efficiency and performance, allowing it to be used for modelling and training based entirely on light.

The upgrade is a key step for optical computing and could help address the growing demand for computational power with low energy consumption. Taichi-II could also provide an alternative after the US restricted China's access to powerful GPU chips for AI training.

3. Oracle, Google Veterans Join CoreWeave to Lead AI Push

CoreWeave, a cloud computing startup backed by Nvidia and Magnetar Capital, has secured a $2.3 billion debt facility using Nvidia's H100 GPUs as collateral. The company plans to use the funds to purchase more high-end chips, among other things.

CoreWeave, originally founded to mine Ethereum, pivoted in 2019 to cloud infrastructure. Nvidia has been hostile to its use of GPUs for Ethereum mining, and CoreWeave is growing quickly, with a projected $500 million in revenue this year and $2 billion the following year.

4. Olympic swimming pool heated by AI data center

AI-driven data centers are being used to keep the Paris Summer Olympics swimming pool warm. Equinix's PA10 data center in Saint-Denis, France, uses excess heat from servers to heat the pool and nearby homes.

The center, designed for high-density server setups, is expected to produce 6.6 thermal megawatts of heat when fully operational. Equinix has also built a rooftop greenhouse using the heat. The surplus heat will be transferred to the Plaine Saulnier urban development zone for 15 years.

5. Amazon Music’s new ‘Topics’ feature uses AI to recommend podcast episodes

Amazon Music has introduced Topics, an AI-powered feature that allows users to easily discover related podcasts based on topics discussed in a particular episode.

The feature, which is currently only available for US customers using the latest version of the Amazon Music mobile app on iOS or Android, uses AI to analyze podcast transcriptions and descriptions to identify key topics. The feature aims to keep up with Spotify, which recently started using Google Cloud's AI tools to offer better personalized recommendations.
