OpenAI is launching the OpenAI Academy to invest in AI developers and organizations to solve hard problems and drive economic growth in low- and middle-income countries.

The academy will provide training, technical guidance, API credits, community building, and contests and incubators. Investing in AI education, resources, and community-building can have a significant impact, as demonstrated by the success of AI applications in dyslexia education and blind and low-vision employment.

2. The chatbot becomes the teacher

Steven Johnson, a meta author, is working at Google as part of the team building NotebookLM, a note-taking and research tool. The product, launched in 2023 as Project Tailwind, has since expanded and been rebranded. Recently, the team launched Audio Overviews, a podcast based on user input. Johnson discusses his fascination with AI, his time at Google, and the present and future of NotebookLM.

He discusses the complicated issues raised by AI tools, whether it's okay to let AI do research, how to ensure accuracy and fact-checking, the importance of context windows in AI's future, and how AI podcast hosts should say "like" in conversation.

3. Jony Ive confirms he’s working on a new device with OpenAI

Jony Ive has confirmed he is working with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman on an AI hardware project. The project, funded by Ive and Emerson Collective, could raise $1 billion by the end of the year. The team currently has 10 employees, including Tang Tan and Evans Hankey, who worked with Ive on the iPhone.

LoveFrom, Ive's company, is leading the device's design. The device is rumored to be inspired by touchscreen technology and the original iPhone. The exact release date and details are still being figured out.

4. Cloudflare moves to end free, endless AI scraping with one-click blocking

Cloudflare has announced new tools that aim to end the era of endless AI scraping by allowing all sites on its network to block bots in one click. The tools will help content creators identify which content is being scanned most by bots, allowing them to eventually wall off access and charge bots to scrape their most valuable content. Cloudflare is also creating a marketplace for sites to negotiate content deals based on more granular AI audits of their sites.

The tools provide content creators with a way to quickly and easily understand how AI model providers are using their content and take control of whether and how the models are able to access it. This is necessary for content creators as the rise of generative AI has made it harder to value their content.

5. Three Mile Island’s Nuclear Plant to Reopen, Help Power Microsoft’s AI Centers

Three Mile Island, the US nuclear power plant that caused the worst commercial nuclear accident in history, will reopen to power Microsoft's data centers. Constellation Energy, America's largest producer of clean, carbon-free energy, has signed its largest-ever power purchase agreement with Microsoft.

The deal will create 3,400 jobs, generate over $3 billion in state and federal taxes, and add $16 billion to Pennsylvania's GDP. The plant is expected to reopen in 2028 and be renamed the Crane Clean Energy Center in honor of Chris Crane.
