1. Google turns to nuclear to power AI data centres

Pivot 5 made with Midjourney

Google has signed a deal with Kairos Power to use small nuclear reactors to power its AI data centres. The deal will begin this decade and increase to 2035. The technology firms are increasingly turning to nuclear sources of energy to supply the electricity used by AI data centres.

The deal aims to accelerate the commercialisation of advanced nuclear energy and demonstrate the technical and market viability of a solution critical to decarbonising power grids. The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission and local agencies must approve the plans before they can proceed. The US joined a group of countries to triple their nuclear energy capacity by 2050 as part of efforts to move away from fossil fuels.

2. Adobe unveils AI video generator trained on licensed content

Adobe has announced Firefly Video Model, an AI-powered text-to-video generation tool that can create unique videos from written prompts. Unlike competitors like OpenAI, Runway, Google, and Meta, Firefly Video Model is trained exclusively on licensed content, potentially avoiding ethical and copyright issues.

The model is the first publicly available video model designed to be commercially safe. Adobe aims to target media professionals, such as video creators and editors, and claims it can produce footage that blends seamlessly with traditionally created video content. Some major brands already use its image generation technology, such as PepsiCo-owned Gatorade and Mattel. However, Adobe may face resistance from some creatives, as the ethics and quality of AI-generated video tools may be a concern.

3. Strava has a new AI coach—and its wacky comments are going viral

Strava

Nash Consing, a video editor, was hit by a car while riding his bike in Brooklyn. Strava, an app that tracks users' activities, released an AI feature called "Athlete Intelligence" on the day of his accident. The feature provides personalized workout summaries in the voice of a coach, despite the setback. The AI tool has drawn skepticism from users, who view it as a gimmick in the AI explosion.

Strava, founded in 2009, has over 125 million users and $150 million in venture funding. The company has been developing its AI tool for newer customers who can often find it difficult to consume the onslaught of information presented by the app. The response to the feature has been overwhelmingly positive, though some users have had fun gaming the outputs and posting them on Reddit.

4. Apple study exposes deep cracks in LLMs’ “reasoning” capabilities

Pivot 5 made with Midjourney

A study by six Apple engineers reveals that advanced LLMs can be unreliable due to their reliance on probabilistic pattern matching. The researchers suggest that LLMs are not capable of genuine logical reasoning but instead attempt to replicate reasoning steps observed in their training data.

They found that when tested on GSM-Symbolic, average accuracy reduced across the board compared to GSM8K, with performance dropping between 0.3% and 9.2%. The researchers also found high variance across 50 separate runs of GSM-Symbolic with different names and values.A

5. OpenAI snatches up Microsoft generative AI research lead

Pivot 5 made with Midjourney

Microsoft has lost its generative AI research lead, Sebastian Bubeck, who left for OpenAI. Bubeck is known for his work on Microsoft's Phi models, which are extra-small language and vision models for AI applications on edge devices.

OpenAI's new role is likely to focus on efficiency and small-model aspects, a field where OpenAI is less prominent.
