2. D-ID launches an AI video translation tool that includes voice cloning and lip sync

AI video creation platform D-ID has launched AI Video Translate, a tool that allows creators to automatically translate their videos into 30 languages, including Arabic, Mandarin, Japanese, Hindi, Spanish, and French. The technology, which is available for free, aims to help customers save on localization costs when scaling campaigns to a global audience in marketing, entertainment, and social media.

D-ID's new Video Translation technology competes with other solutions for dubbing and AI video, and is available through D-ID Studio and its API. The feature works with only one person in the frame and, if successful, can be used for voice cloning.

3. California becomes first state to partner with tech firms to pay for journalism

California will become the first US state to direct millions of dollars from taxpayer money and tech companies to support journalism and AI research. The deal, announced on Wednesday, will collectively pay around $250m over five years to support California-based news organizations and create an AI research program.

The initiative will begin in 2025, with $100m the first year. The deal marks the end of a yearlong fight between tech giants and lawmakers over a proposal to require companies to pay a certain percentage of advertising revenue to media companies.

4. Google appoints former Character.AI founder as co-lead of its AI models

Google has appointed Noam Shazeer, former head of startup Character.AI, to co-lead its main AI project, Gemini. Shazeer will serve as a technical lead on Gemini, alongside Jeff Dean and Oriol Vinyals. Gemini is the line of AI models developed by DeepMind, Google's AI division, and is integrated into products like Search and Pixel smartphones.

Google paid billions to bring Shazeer and a few other employees into DeepMind and to strike a licensing agreement with Character.AI. The deal resembles similar moves by Amazon and Microsoft to nab top talent from AI startups, as Big Tech companies face regulatory scrutiny.

5. Perplexity AI to launch ads on search platform by fourth quarter

Perplexity AI, an AI startup backed by Jeff Bezos, plans to introduce advertising on its artificial intelligence-powered search platform by the fourth quarter. The startup launched a program for publishers with partners including TIME, Der Spiegel, and Fortune, sharing revenue from interactions where a publisher's content is referenced.

Perplexity AI raised $62.7 million in April, doubling its valuation to over $1 billion. The company has been viewed as a threat to Google's dominant position in the industry.
