China's Vidu, an advanced AI model developed by ShengShu-AI and Tsinghua University, is set to compete with OpenAI's Sora at the 2024 Zhongguancun Forum in Beijing. Vidu uses the Universal Vision Transformer to generate 16-second 1080p video clips with a simple prompt, resembling the physical world in detail and realism.
It incorporates Chinese symbols like pandas and dragons, attracting local content creators and audiences. This technological breakthrough reflects China's broader goals to lead in AI while balancing national interests and cultural identity.

2. GitHub Copilot can now help start a project with AI, not just complete it
GitHub is introducing GitHub Copilot Workspace, a new service that aims to reduce the time engineers and developers spend reading through code and figuring out how to start on a new project. The service will be integrated into GitHub repositories or libraries, allowing developers to describe their project through prompts. Copilot Workspace will then offer suggestions on how to start and provide a step-by-step process.
Users can edit the suggestions and, once satisfied, run the code or use Copilot to help complete the project. Copilot Workspace is helpful for reviewing older code because it can scan the code base and understand how it ticks faster than humans can read written documentation explaining it.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology has launched NIST GenAI, a new program to assess generative AI technologies, including text- and image-generating AI. The program will release benchmarks, help create "content authenticity" detection systems, and encourage the development of software to spot fake or misleading AI-generated information.
The first project is a pilot study to build systems that can reliably tell the difference between human-created and AI-generated media, starting with text. The launch comes as the volume of AI-generated misinformation and disinformation grows exponentially.

Drake has removed a track featuring an AI-generated version of Tupac Shakur's voice from his Instagram account after lawyers threatened to sue. The track, Taylor Made Freestyle, also used AI to mimic Snoop Dogg, was uploaded last Friday.
Tupac's estate ordered Drake to delete the track within 24 hours, and neither side has commented publicly since the track was removed. Howard King, a lawyer for Tupac's estate, sent a cease-and-desist letter to Drake, calling Taylor Made Freestyle a "flagrant violation" of the law and an "abuse" of Tupac's legacy.
