Microsoft has temporarily halted construction on parts of its ambitious data center project in Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin, while evaluating the scope and potential impact on the design of the facilities. The company plans to complete the first phase of the data center, which is expected to cost $3.3 billion by the end of 2026.
The AI data center was expected to be used by ChatGPT-parent OpenAI for a massive supercomputer. 3. AI-influenced shopping boosts online holiday sales, Salesforce data shows
AI-powered chatbots have significantly boosted online sales in the US during the 2024 holiday season, according to a report by Salesforce. Retailers used chatbots for targeted promotions, product recommendations, and loyalty programs to influence customers.
Online sales rose to $282 billion in the US between November 1 and December 31, ahead of Salesforce's forecast of 2% growth. However, a high rate of product returns by customers at 28%, compared to 20% in 2023, could reduce overall profit margins for retailers. The report also noted that orders placed through smartphones peaked on Christmas day, with 79% of all orders being placed through mobile devices.
