2. North Korean hacker got hired by US security vendor, immediately loaded malware

KnowBe4, a US-based security vendor, has revealed that it unknowingly hired a North Korean hacker who attempted to load malware into its network. The incident was detected before causing any major problems, and no illegal access was gained or data was lost. KnowBe4 was looking for a software engineer for its internal IT AI team.

The hacker was identified as an insider threat or nation state actor, and an active FBI investigation is underway. The company operates in 11 countries and provides security awareness training, including phishing security tests, to corporate customers. The hacker passed a background check and video interviews, confirming the individual's identity and the fake photo provided to HR.

3. New NVIDIA NeMo Retriever Microservices Boost LLM Accuracy and Throughput

NVIDIA has announced four new NVIDIA NeMo Retriever NIM inference microservices to help developers efficiently fetch proprietary data for AI applications. These microservices enable enterprises to scale to agentic AI workflows, delivering the highest accuracy retrieval-augmented generation (RAG).

They enable connecting custom models to diverse business data and delivering highly accurate responses for AI applications using RAG. The microservices are available through the NVIDIA API catalog and offer two model types: embedding and reranking.

4. Microsoft is adding AI-powered summaries to Bing search results

Microsoft has begun previews for Bing's generative search, which will provide an original response compiled by AI. The tool is not yet an opt-in choice for Bing users and is only being applied to a small percentage of user queries. Google's AI Overview tool was developed to retain users who might go directly to an AI chatbot for answers.

Microsoft emphasizes that generative search is not a replacement for actual news. Reddit has also blocked major search engines other than Brave and Google, with the latter in discussions with several of them.

5. Alphabet’s earnings set the stage for tech’s AI question

Google parent Alphabet reported better-than-expected earnings and revenue in Q2, driven by search ads and cloud growth. However, YouTube ad sales fell short.
